What is KESS II?
KESS stands for Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS II) and provides opportunities for funded PhD and MRes study in collaboration with a company partner. The research undertaken is specific to that business or its sector and includes a Postgraduate Skills Development Award. It is suitable for students living in the convergence area of Wales (West Wales and the Valleys) and who are eligible to work in the area after their study period.
Following the highly successful KESS project between 2009 and 2014, KESS II will provide 645 scholarships over the course of six years.

What makes KESS Scholarships different?
Collaboration – The programme is based on collaboration, something that is increasingly important to the success of both large and small businesses.
Area Specific – The research project is specific to an area of interest for the company partner.
Real-world Application – The company partner provides supervision for the student and access to their business for some of the study period.
Personal Development – Projects are integrated with a high-level skills training programme, the Postgraduate Skills Development Award (PSDA), meaning that a KESS scholar really understands how to apply their knowledge in a business and enterprise context.

A KESS scholarship is unique – from the valuable links with business to the collaboration involved, the Postgraduate Skills Development Award and much more! No two scholarships are alike. KESS scholarships have taken place in different sectors and subjects with very different business partners and students. KESS scholars are also given the chance to attend annual events which are great opportunities to meet other KESS scholars from various academic disciplines across the board.
